FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

WHAT IS MY CURL PATTERN?

Curly hair patterns vary from type 2 to type 4, depending on how tight or loose your curl is. It is determined by the shape of the hair follicle that grows out of your scalp. Most people have more than one pattern in their hair. A simple breakdown:

 Type 1 – Straight

 Type 2 – Wavey

 Type 3 – Curly

 Type 4 – Coily

The sub classifications of A to C are based on the width or diameter of your wave, curl or coil pattern.

Type A – wider pattern

Type B – medium

Type C – smallest

WHAT IS POROSITY?

hairdressers specialising in curly hair in Lewisham and London hair porosity diagram

Hair porosity is your hair’s ability to absorb and retain moisture.

The porosity of your hair effects how well oils and moisture pass in and out of the outermost layer of your hair, known as the cuticle.

WHAT HAIR POROSITY DO I HAVE?

The test would normally be done on clean, shampooed hair with no product. It is performed by placing a strand of hair in a glass of water. Place it gently on the surface and wait for three minutes.

Low porosity – Sits on the water surface (packed with moisture)

Medium porosity – Floats somewhere in the middle (balanced moisture)

High porosity – Sinks to the bottom (low moisture)

WHAT REMEDIES ARE THERE FOR HIGH OR LOW POROSITY?

Low porosity – Steam and heat treatments to open the cuticle. Avoid product build up and choose lighter liquid base products that are more easily absorbed.

Medium – This is the ideal balance.

High Porosity – Leave in conditioners and mask to hydrate thirsty strands and combat frizz, restore shine and rebuild strength. Oils and sealants are also advised as they coat the strand with a barrier to lock in the moisture.

IS MY HAIR SUITABLE FOR COLOURING?

Depending on the desired effect, a consultation with your stylist / colourist is usually advised. Avoid home kit colours and always opt to have your hair coloured professionally. During the consultation and depending on the condition of your hair, your stylist/colourist can determine if your hair is suitable or recommend an alternative.

WHAT IS A HAIR MASK?

Hair masks, also known as intensive conditioning treatments or deep conditioning treatments are used to help moisturise and nourish your hair. They are especially beneficial for dry, damaged or frizzy hair. Some hair masks may even improve the health of your scalp and boost the strength of your hair. They can be aided with a help of a heat source such as a steamer or Climazone. They can also be blended with some nourishing oils i.e. Moroccan argan oil.

WHAT IS A DRY CUT?

This is a cut done to achieve a desired shape or style on dry hair. The client walks in with their hair diffused or curls in place and the cut is made without having to wet or shampoo the hair.

WHAT STYLING PRODUCTS ARE SUITABLE FOR MY HAIR?

Your curl pattern, your hair porosity and the condition of your hair determine what styling and finishing products are suitable. A consultation with our stylist could assist with choosing the right products.

HOW DO I SLEEP, AND WILL MY CURLS LOOK GOOD THE NEXT DAY?

For sleeping, we recommend a silk pillow, a silk bonnet, or a silk scarf:

Silk Pillow – Do the pineapple on the loosest band and sleep

Silk Bonnet – Do the pineapple on the loosest band and make the hair gently enter the bonnet

Silk Scarf – If it’s a square shape please fold in two (triangle shape) then bring all the hair to the front. Bring the silk scarf from behind to gather the curls at the front, and now fold that front triangle inwards before you tie it.

HOW OFTEN DO I REFRESH MY HAIR?

Fill an empty spraying bottle with water, and add tiny amount of your favourite conditioner or oil or gel, and use as you would any other hair refresher. There are also many products available for this exact purpose.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I WASH MY CURLS?

We recommend one or two times a week as a maximum.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I TRIM MY CURLS?

A normal trim every 4-5 months, depending on the shape preferred.
